WHAT IS CYTOLYTIC VAGINOSIS (CV)
CV involves an overgrowth of one dominant strain of lactobacilli.
CV typically involves a pH level that is too low. This causes burning and sloughing off of vaginal tissues.
Taking or inserting probiotics can make this condition worse! So be cautious. Stop using if it makes your symptoms flair up.
Women with CV will typically present with thrush-like symptoms Eg burning and itching with irritated angry vulva tissues but traditional thrush treatments won’t help or improve symptoms at all.
Many women with CV feel their symptoms improve after their period or unprotected sex. These activities tend to increase the pH.
Baking soda is often used to treat some strains of CV because it helps to increase the pH balance.
Baking Soda or Sodium Bicarbonate or Bicarbonate of Soda has a pH of 9 approx. which is mildly alkaline. Being an alkaline substance means that Baking Soda will increase our vaginal pH.
The amount of baking soda used in these capsules has been carefully calculates to not be enough to burn or over correct the pH. In fact this treatment will either help or do nothing. It will not make symptoms worse even if you dont have CV.
How to test
There are many ways to test for CV including getting a Juno Bio test.
If possible visit your local sexual health clinic to test for CV. Excess lactobacolli can be easily seen in a wet mount. These clinics are often cheaper or free.
